KI 2475 How to use filer.uib.no

(updated )
This knowledge item is about sharing/publishing files internally (at UiB) and externally.
About the filer.uib.no service

The filer.uib.no service is for publishing files internally and externally. The service is located at ekstern.filer.uib.no/subdirectory/ and intern.filer.uib.no/subdirectory/. NB! Note that what you enter as a URL must end with a slash. The choice of subdirectory depends on your affiliation. See the existing subdirectories in the list further down in this article.

An example of a valid URL is as follows:

https://ekstern.filer.uib.no/bio/
Uploading files

The area \\sysfelles.uib.no\http_filer is used for uploading the files to be published.
Connecting to sysfelles on Windows

Enter \\sysfelles.uib.no\http_filer in the address field in the file explorer. You can also create a more permanent connection to the area by using the Connect to network drive function in the file explorer.
Connecting to sysfelles on Mac

Select Finder > Go and enter the path smb://uib;username@sysfelles.uib.no/http_filer. You should replace the word username with the username you were assigned when your UiB account was created. You can add this area as a favorite among network drives and/or folder in Finder, for easier connection at a later time.
Access

Apply for access by creating a call in https://hjelp.uib.no. Specify which subdirectory you should have access to. Provide the name of your manager, so that it is possible for us to request approval, if applicable.

How to use the service

The files that you want to be available outside the UiB network are placed in the ekstern folder. The files must be in a format that meets the requirements for open standards.

The following is a list of file formats that are allowed when using external:
.odt and fodt - OpenDocument word processing
  • .ods, .fods - OpenDocument spreadsheet
  • .odp, .fodp - OpenDocument presentation
  • .odg, .fodg - OpenDocument graphics
  • .odf - OpenDocument formulas and mathematical functions
  • .pdf
  • .mp4, .mpg, .ogm, .ogv, .mp3, .flac - for video and audio
  • .txt - plain text
Files in other formats can be placed in the ekstern folder, but will not be displayed on ekstern.filer.uib.no.

The files you place in the intern folder will only be available on computer connected to the UiB network. The files must still be considered publicly available, as there are many people (students and employees) who have access to the UiB network.

When using intern, most file formats are allowed. The following is a list of exceptions:
  • .html, .htm - html format
  • .php - php code
  • .js - javascript
  • .css - cascading style sheets
  • .exe, .com - executable file
As when using ekstern, files with a format that is not approved can be placed in the intern folder, but they will not be displayed on intern.files.uib.no.

Please note that special Norwegian characters in directory and file names do not work for either ekstern.filer.uib.no or intern.filer.uib.no.
