Today is December 1st, and Christmas is approaching. A good amount of Christmas decorations have already been put up around our buildings, and there will surely be even more holiday spirit in the days ahead. At this time of year it is important that we also keep fire safety in mind, so here are a few reminders:
Open flames are not allowed in UiB buildings. Instead, feel free to use LED candles, which create almost the same cozy atmosphere but with much less risk.
Make sure that emergency exit signs (green signs with white arrows) remain free of decorations – the general rule is that they should be clearly visible within a few meters’ walk. Fire safety equipment (exit signs, smoke detectors, sprinkler heads) must not be used to hang decorations.
Keep escape routes, emergency exits, and stairwells clear of obstacles.
Do not cover light fixtures or lamps.
Limit the use of extension cords.
Ensure that electrical Christmas decorations are free of damage or defects, and turn them off at the end of the workday.
The start of Advent is also a great opportunity to check fire safety at home and make sure smoke detectors are working properly and have fresh batteries.
