KI 0637 Connect to VPN from private PC with Windows 10/11

How to download, install, and connect to the UiB VPN from a private Windows PC.
To connect to the UiB VPN, you must download and use the program Cisco Secure Client.

Note: Pictures and explanations are directed towards Windows 11. If you are on Windows 10, the steps and order should be the exact same, but some menus might have another layout or simply look different.
1. Install Cisco Secure Client
  1. Open your browser (e.g. Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome), and go to vpn3.uib.no.
  2. Click Logon.
  3. Log in with your UiB user account.
  4. Approve the login with your two-factor solution. If you have not set up two-factor authentication on your UiB account, you must do that first, see: KI 3114 Setting up two-factor authentication.
  5. Click Download for Windows to download the installation file.
  6. Open the file once the download is finished.


    Alternatively, you can also find the installation file in Downloads in File Explorer and open it there once it has finished downloading.
  7. Start the installation of the program as usual by clicking Next, accepting the license agreement, clicking Next, clicking Install, and finally allowing the installation.






  8. When the installation is finished, click Finish, and you can start using Cisco Secure Client to connect to the UiB VPN.
2. Using Cisco Secure Client
  1. Open the Start menu and look for Cisco Secure Client. If you can't find it, you can search for Cisco and it should appear.




  2. A small window should then appear in the right-hand corner of your screen.
    In the field, type in: vpn3.uib.no (Don't forget to type the «3») and then click Connect.
  3. A window should then appear where you need to log in to your UiB account. (It will remember your login for next time, so you only need to log in the first time and occasionally after that)
  4. Once you have logged in, your PC will be connected to the UiB VPN and the window will close, followed by a notification stating that you are connected.

If you want to verify that you are connected to the UiB VPN, you can go to minip.no, and check that the IP address starts with 129.177 — if it does, it means you are connected to the UiB VPN.

To turn off the VPN, you must open Cisco again and click Disconnect.

Known issues:
  • I still can't access the website after activating the VPN.

    Suggested solution: The website often doesn't detect that you are on the VPN. To check, you can try opening the website in a different browser, or perform a "hard refresh" (Not the same as a regular refresh) on the website. To do this, you must click Ctrl + Shift + R at the same time.

  • I lose internet access when I connect to the VPN.

    Suggested solution: Check that you don't have any other VPN services on your computer. If you do, make sure they are completely turned off and not running in the background.
