KI 0637 Connect to VPN from private PC with Windows 10/11

How to download, install and connect to VPN with Cisco AnyConnect from a private Windows PC.
Before you can use VPN with Cisco AnyConnect, multi-factor authentication must be activated for your user account.
FIRST TIME USE:
  1. Make sure the PC on which you are installing Cisco AnyConnect is actually connected to the Internet.
     
      
  2. Open a web browser, e.g. Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, and go to https://vpn3.uib.no (it is important to use https).
     
      
  3. Log in with your UiB username and password. 
     
    You must approve the login with multi-factor authentication (MFA)  on your mobile. If you have chosen to use an authentication app on your mobile (recommended!), you will receive a notification on your mobile that you must approve.
     
  4. Click Download for Windows. If you are asked to open or save, you can select Open or Run.
     
  5. Click the downloaded file to open and run it.
     
       
  6. Install the program in the usual way, by clicking Next, accepting the user agreement and proceeding.
    When the installation is complete, click Finish. Below you see an excerpt of the installation process shown in 3 pictures.
     
  7. Open the Start menu and look for Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client (it my be sufficient to type the text Cisco Any to find the program).
    In this case it has just been installed, and is therefore to be found at the top of the list, under Recently added.
    Click it to launch the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.
     
  8. In the text field, type vpn3.uib.no then click Connect.
     
       
  9. You will now be logged in. If you are already logged in to your Microsoft 365 (Work or School) account on this machine, it should happen automatically and almost invisibly.
    If you are not logged in, a window will appear asking you to log in as usual and confirm with multi-factor authentication.
       
  10. Your PC is now connecting to VPN, and in a few seconds you will see that the window with Cisco AnyConnect disappear and that the icon has been given a padlock.
     

To verify that you are connected to VPN and the UiB network, you can go to a website that shows your IP address, e.g. http://minip.no (external page). If your IP address starts with 129,177, you are connected to UiB's network using VPN. You will now have access to UiB resources.

CONNECT AND DISCONNECT VPN
Connect:

Cisco AnyConnect now starts automatically with your computer. You can also find the program in the Start menu.

To connect, right-click on the Cisco AnyConnect icon and select Connect. Enter your username and password if you are prompted, and authenticate with the app or SMS as described above if you are not logged in automatically.



Disconnect:

Pease disconnect from VPN when you do not need to access UiB's resources. All data traffic from your PC and onto the internet goes through UiB's VPN service, and this should not be used when you do not need it.

To disconnect, right-click on Cisco AnyConnect icons and select Disconnect.
