Procedure
1. Getting started with two-factor authentication
To get started with two-factor authentication:- Log in to account.microsoft.com in a web browser on a PC. (You can use a mobile device, but some parts of this guide may not match.)
- Click Sign in and log in with your UiB account.
- When you do this, a menu will appear asking you to set up an additional method to verify your sign-in.
Click Next, and continue to the next part of the guide: 2. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app.
Didn’t get the menu mentioned above?
- If you have previously used Microsoft Authenticator or another two-factor method on your UiB account, you can follow KI 1381 Microsoft Authenticator (two-factor) on a new mobile device.
- If you did not see the menu as described and shown in the image above, and instead ended up on a page showing an overview of your account:
- Under Security info, click Update info.
- Click Add sign-in method
- Click Microsoft Authenticator. Make sure not to choose Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator, which is the top option that appears.
- Once you have done this, you can proceed to the next step of the guide.
- Under Security info, click Update info.
2. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app
Note: The images show the steps in the App Store on an iPhone, but the process should be similar on other devices via Google Play.- Open App store or Google Play
- In the search field, search for: Microsoft Authenticator.
- In the search results, find Microsoft Authenticator and click on it.
Important: There are many apps with similar names and icons. These often pay to appear at the top of the search results when you search for “authenticator.” Make sure you install Microsoft Authenticator, not a similar app. Many of these other apps may require payment after installation, but Microsoft Authenticator does not. - Download the app
- Once the app is installed, you can open it and proceed to the next part of the guide.
3. Connect the app to your UiB account
- When you open the app, you must first tap Continue to accept the privacy statement.
- Then tap either the Scan QR code button, or the blue button at the bottom right with a QR code icon.
- You will receive some permission requests to allow the app to access your camera and send you notifications. Tap Yes on both.
- Back on your PC, click Next on the next two menus until a QR code appears.
- Scan the QR code with your mobile device (do not use the camera app; use the Microsoft Authenticator app to scan).
- Once the QR code is scanned, you will see University of Bergen and your email address in the app. On your PC, you will see the message “Set up complete.”
In most cases, a test is performed where you need to enter the number shown on the PC screen into the app. Once this is done, the setup is complete.
