KI 1060 Where do I find the name of my computer?

All computers installed by the IT division have unique names. When you are in contact with user support, we may ask what your machine is called.
UiB PC with Windows
To find the name of your Windows PC, click the Start menu (1) - type About your PC in the search field (2) and select the first hit from the list of results (3).
NB: If you have set the system language to Norwegian, you must write Om PC-en.



The Device name field displays the name of your PC.



UiB-Mac
  1. Click the Apple menu at the top left. Select About This Mac.



  2. Most new Macs have the serial number as their machine name. But to be absolutely sure of getting the right name, you can click System Report.

  3. The actual name of the Mac is displayed at the bottom of the window.




UiB-PC with Linux
  1. Open Activities by clicking the top left of the screen, or by pressing the Super key. Start typing Computer info to search. (it may be sufficient to type info).

    Click UiB Computer ... to start the Computer Information program.



  2. The window displays information such as machine name and user name.


Advanced users
Windows:
Press Win + R. Type cmd and press Enter. Then type hostname and press Enter. You will get the machine name.
Type exit and press Enter when done.

Ubuntu / Linux:
Press CTRL + Alt + T. Type hostname and press Enter.
Type exit and press Enter when done.

Mac:
Press Command + Space and type terminal and press Enter. Type hostname and press Enter.
Type exit and press Enter when done.
