KI 1075 Installing a new PC with "Autopilot"

How to install and set up your new Windows PC. It is not necessary to hand the PC in to the IT division, but it must be registered in our systems.
The IT division has adopted a new method of installing PCs. This means that you no longer need to hand in your to the IT division for installation. You set it up yourself in your own office.

Do not switch on the machine until the IT department has given the go-ahead for this.

Preparations:
  1. You must register a request at Hjelp.uib.no with the following information:
  • Service Tag / Serial Number
  • Asset Tag
  • MAC address
This information can be found on the back of the computer, or on the box in which the computer was shipped.

2. Although installation is possible on a wireless network (eduroam), we would strongly recommend using a wired network.

A network adapter must be included in the machine's box. Use this to connect the machine to UiB's wired network.

It is for now NOT possible to do this from the home office.

Once you have been told by the IT division to proceed, connect the computer (power and network) and switch it on.

Installation
1. Switch the computer on while it is connected to a wired network and power. It will automatically start the installation procedure and you will see a screen with "Just a moment…"

2. Select Norway in the list of countries. Then click on Yes.

3. Select Norwegian and click Yes.

4. When asked if you want to add another keyboard layout, click Skip.

The computer will now run through a number of processes. Let it work. This may take a few minutes. Do not turn off the machine or close the lid.

5. When you are greeted by this screen, you must log in with your UiB e-mail address. You must use the form firstname.lastname@uib.no

Click Next to proceed.

If your account is set up with two-factor authentication, you will receive either a notification on your mobile or an SMS with a one-time code.
Approve the login, or enter the one-time code you received via SMS. Then click Next.

The computer will now continue with the setup. Let it work. This may take several minutes.
Do not turn off the machine or close the lid.

6. Once you have reached the Windows login screen, you can press "Enter" or "Space". Log in with your UiB username on the form abc123 and your UiB password.

7. Even if you are logged in, the installation is not complete yet.
You need to leave the computer connected to both power and network for a while more. Do not start working on the computer yet, it will take several restarts before it is finished.

IMPORTANT! The computer's BIOS will be updated during this stage. It is extremely important that you do not switch the computer off, disconnect the power or close the lid during this stage! Let it finish.
Noise from the computer's fans during this stage is normal.

8. Log on to the computer again. It should now be ready for use.

You can connect to the Eduroam wireless network with your username (in the form abc123@uib.no) and your UiB password.

If you are going to take the machine home, turn it off and disconnect it from the wired network.
Feel free to log in once without it being connected, to verify that the login works fine.

After installation
  1. Icons, files and other personal documents should be automatically available after a while. Home area (O :) and Common areas (P :) / (N :) etc. are automatically available. If you want access to these sites when you are at home, you must connect to VPN (please see KI 0560 for instructions).
  2. Install software from the Software Center. For fastest installation, we recommend that this is done using wireless network at UiB. If you want to do it outside UiB, you have to use VPN.
  3. Access to install software outside the Software Center can be obtained by contacting BRITA.

NB: The computer must be on a wireless UiB network for us to grant you this access.
